World Ambient Mix Download - PsyAmb 23

Bookmark and Share

Today's mix is a collection of ambient world music with a garnish of psychedelia. We kick off with "Sandstorm Dreaming" by "Terra Ambient". Terra Ambient is the solo project of award-winning American producer Jeff Kowal. Jeff's latest release , 2009's "Wanderlust" , is a deep tribal ambient dream-scape that it a real pleasure to listen to from start to finish. More info can be found at the Terra Ambient website and label "Lotuspike". Lotuspike is also home to some "Darshan Ambient" releases which I also highly recommend.

Next up is "Palyrria" with a tune from the"Chillogram" compilation of 2005 which was recently featured as album of the week here on PsyAmb. Palyriia began in Greece in 1996 as a dance music oriented band. They slowly evolved from that starting point into a five member world music ensemble. Their work displays a sophisticated mix of electronic sounds and traditional ethnic and Mediterranean instruments.

After Palyrria we have "Lemon Tree"with the tune "Spirit" from "Organic Records" 2006 release , "Psymeditation 2". I don't know much about "Lemon Tree" myself. They have another track released on the first Psymediation compilation. Apart from that I haven't heard much else. If anyone knows more please drop me a mail or post some details here on the blog.

Following that we have a track from Denmark's "
Søvnigt Sind". This is from the compilation album "Amber : Gold of the North" which was released through internet label "Zealotry Music". Zealotry is dedicated to releasing free music from Danish ambient and chillout producers. If you enjoy this track then visit the Zealotry sight where you can download a full length Søvnigt Sind album. There is also a new compilation called "Tanmaurk" available for download.

"Makyo" is next with the track "Takshaka" from the 2001 album "Yakshini". Makyo a.k.a Giovanni Fazio who writes all the music, and plays most of it , went through a long musical evolution before arriving in Makyo. In the early 80s he spent time in Kyoto, Japan studying zen by day and playing in hardcore punk bands by night. In the late 80s he travelled to Taipei and Boston, playing in psychedelic Branca-influenced guitar ensembles, releasing through the mail-art/cassette underground, and dj-ing a free-style radio show on WZBC.

Since 1993, Gio has been a regular dj on Tokyo's club scene, appearing mostly in chill-out rooms, and appearing with the likes of Mixmaster Morris, The Orb's Alex Patterson, Ken Ishii, Haruomi Hosono, Tsuyoshi, Underworld, Solar Quest, and more. Gio is also label manager of Tokyo's "Dakini Records" , one of the longest running and most respected ambient world music labels around. Mayko's own music is an intelligent, trance inducing collection of ethnoambient masterpeices. With four highly respected studio albums , a number of classic EPs and countless compilation appearances , Gio has become a huge favorite of ambient trance and world music lovers all over the world. My personal favorite is his "Suzhou River" EP from 2001 released through "Uplink Records". This was produced as a soundtrack to film maker You Lee's movie of the same name.

"Ishtar" by "The Peaking Goddess Collective" is a slow moving river of mellow ethno psychedelic groove that is really what TPGC is all about. I'm a huge fan of TPGC and have talked about them enough in the past here on PsyAmb so check back to episode 16 for a bit of an intro to the wonderful world of these aural psychonaughts.

Next up is Palyrria once again , this time a collaboration with Peak Records' "Ajja" and "Master Margherita" , both members of TPGC. The more I do these mixes the more I realize just how often Peak Records' artists seem find their way into the set each week. I think this must be reflective of just how solid the label is - there doesn't seem to be any filler on any of their releases. Quite amazing really. Ajja is an eclectic and multi-talented Swiss artist who channels his creativity through parallel careers as musician/producer/dj, Peak Records label manager, graphic artist and tattoo artist. Master Margherita is a musician also based in Switzerland. Since 1988, he has been very active in the european music scene where his first steps were as a bass player in various rock bands. In 1994 he started composing tracks which mixed and matched live instruments with all sorts of electronic ”devices“. This experimentation saw a change of musical direction for him which evolved into the bass infused enthno dub he is known for today.

"Slackbaba" is next with a tune from the "Liquid Records" compilation "Soul Vibration 2" - an awesome compilation by the way. I think it will be one of the biggest release of the year. A melting pot of fluid grooves and swirling psychedelic melodies, blended with a healthy dose of dubby phatness and a touch of the ethnic, Slackbaba’s music draws the listener through a labyrinth of pulsing rhythms and mind-altering sonic states. I'm eagerly awaiting the release of Slackbaba's latest CD "Perverting Mankind" which is due out next month and promises to be a genre-bending mix of psychedelic ambient and funky psytrance killers.

Following Slackbaba is "Solar Cell" from American "Shakatura" ( Galen Butler ). Bay Area producer and DJ Shakatura creates a lush and positive fusion of dubbed-over breaks, tribal house, and world rhythms. I have had the pleasure of catching a number of Galen's sets over the years and they have never disappointed. The guy has so much talent dripping from his fingers. This tune comes from his second full length CD , 2003's "Galactivation". One of my"all time favorite releases. You may have run across some of his tracks on "Ceiba Records" compilation a number of years back. Ceiba introduced me and thousands of others to a lot of great artists through those classic compilations. From the looks of the Ceiba website they are still active but seem to be more as a fashion and jewelry outlet the days. As for Galen , I haven't seen much from him either these last few years. Lets hope he still has it in him to produce some more great tunes and another awesome Shakatura CD. There is also a nice little interview with Galen over at "Tripzine" that was conducted back in 2002.

After Shakatura we have "Alien Soap Opera" with "Artifical Dream" from the 2001 release "Second Wave" on "Melt 2000 Records". Alien Soap Opera (ASO) was formed in Cairo, Egypt by "Amir Abdel Magid" and "Greg Hunter". In the summer of 1993, Hunter was in Cairo recording an album with the influential punk band Killing Joke, and he met Magid, who was recording in the same studio. The day before Hunter was due to leave Egypt he went to the studio, where Magid asked him to do a mix of a track that evening. He agreed to do it, the mix went well, and in the morning Magid and Hunter decided to form a band which they later named Alien Soap Opera.

Check back to PsyAmb episode 14 for more info on Greg and the various groups he has been involved in over the years. Magid is a musician/producer/arranger famous throughout the Middle East for his Kanoon (Egyptian Harp) playing, his recordings, and his live performances. He is a familiar sight on Arabic TV, and he regularly tours with his orchestra throughout the world. Second Wave quickly became something of a collectors item for a while as it was almost impossible to get hold of back in the day. Fortunately, thanks to the likes of iTunes and Amazon it is far more available today. Highly recommended. Also check out "Frozen Ants" by another of Greg's collaborations "Subsurfing". Subsurfing were around a few years before ASO however they carried a similar sound I think.

Rounding things off today is a nice long ambient bedtime lullaby from "Jairamji". Jairamji released just the once CD , "Kindred Spirits" back in 2003 on "Dakini Records". The album was a success on the world music stage and tracks from it often appeared in the sets I played at that time. Their music is emotional and poetic and never slips into that cheesy side of world music that the world was awash with in the early 2000's. Reflective, meditative and a true delight.

That's it once again for another episode of PsyAmb . I hope you enjoy the mix. Oh , before I forget , a few listeners have sent me some tunes of late so I'm looking to do a listener's mix in the near future. If you would like any of your own tunes to be included and promoted here please get in contact and I'll do my best to add you in. Cheers for now ...

Ambient Music Mix Download - PsyAmb 22

This week I've decided to try something a little different here at PsyAmb. Regular visitors to this site will know that I do love my beats and bass when it comes to psybient music. However, I also appreciate all the quality beatless ambient music
being produced by the many fine artists within the psychedelic ambient music scene. With that in mind I present to you here a very chilled out selection of deep ambience that's lights on the percussion.

The opening track is from one of my favorite releases of last year - "Tokyo" by "Marconi Union" . Marconi Union are Richard Talbot and James Crossley, a British musical duo with strong links to the Manchester based DOTCA arts collective. They are notable for incorporating elements of electronica, ambient, jazz and dub into their music, and a tendency to make records that are conceptually-based. Frequent comparisons are drawn between Marconi Union and bands such as Talk Talk, Sigur Rós and Boards of Canada.

"Pan Electric" is next with the track "A Winter's Walk". This is a great tune from the excellent "Conscious Pilot" album of 2007. Pan Electric is one man audio magician Matt Coldrick from the U.K. Matt was featured in a previous episode of PsyAmb ( Episode 14 ). Check it out for more info and tunes from this highly regarded artist. I also recommend stopping by the label Matt operates called "Absolute Ambient".

Following on from Pan Electric is a tune from one of my all-time favorite CDs. "Slim Westerns Vol I & II" by the group "A Small, Good Thing". It plays out as a soundtrack to an imaginable western - think of Ennio Morricone mixed with Brian Eno and throw in Clint Eastwood on a desolate landscape - tremendous ! Band member Andrew Hume is also a member of "O Yuki Conjugate" - another of my favorite ambient groups.

Next we have "Objekt4" from the CD "Space Jungle Slums" released through "Ajana Records" in 2007. Objekt4 (pronounced "Objective" because 4 = IV in roman numerals ) is the industrial, dark ambient band created by Anders Peterson in 2003 with the aim of expanding cinematic sound design into music. I'm not sure in Objeckt4 is still around though. I remember he released a notice a few years ago saying that he has put the project to rest. However he has so many aliases it can be difficult to keep track of him. Anyway, everything he touches is gold and well worth looking into if you like your ambient a bit on the dark side. This CD can be found at "Ajana Records" along with many great psychedelic ambient records.

Track four in the mix is from Australian music legend "Gus Till". Active as a musician/producer and DJ since the Punk days of the 70's in Melbourne Australia. The keyboard player for many pop groups (Beargarden and The Models) and was part of Michael Hutchences ( INXS ) 'Max Q' project before forming "Third Eye" with fellow Australian Ollie Olsen. He was also a member of 'The Ears' upon which the infamous 'Dogs in Space' film was based. Towards the end of the 80's he recorded a project with Bono and Edge from U2 and Todd Terry. This period saw shifts to New York and Paris for 3 years before finally settling in London. During this period he worked with and remixed African Jazz/Soul legend Manu Dibango, Nina Hagen, Jamiroquai, producer Youth (for who he was his in-house engineer at Butterfly studios) amongst others. Gus is well known in the psychedelic music scene through his work with projects like Bus , Turban Block and Zen Lemonade and Slinky Wizard. This tune comes from the ambient compilation "Wabi" released through once defunct now reborn ( as a donation based net-label ) "Flying Rhino Records". The Rhinos are doing an amazing thing here - a lot of their back catalog is now available for download with PayPal donation going to help starving children of Goa , India.

Circular is a Norwegian band who found themselves a nice home on "Ultimae Records" after a few releases on various labels. Their CD on Ultime is called "Substans" and is an absolute beauty ! This track comes from Cirular's early days - a 2001 "Interchill Records" release called "Flotation". Much like "Wabi" , this was another CD I pla
yed to death.

Follow
ing Circular is ambient superstar "ISHQ" with a track from the highly acclaimed album "Orchid". ISHQ's members , Matt Hillier and Jacqueline Kersley, are based in the UK and have been making music since about 1995 under various guises including 'Indigo egg , Ishvara , Elve and a few other alter egos. Matt and Jacqueline also run ' Virtual ' a limited edition cd label which releases their more experimental soundscape music and other studio works. Orchid is an amazing piece of art. A true meditative masterpiece that should be in the collection of all lovers of ambient music.

Next w
e have Italian duo "Aqua dorsa" and a track from "Zaum Vol 1" CD released through Irish label "Psychonavigation Records". The CD is a mix of pure ambient and some more up beat driven tunes. A pretty solid release overall. The group involves "Enrico Coniglio" and "Gianluigi Gasparetti" a.k.a "Oophoi". This track can also be found on their debut albumn "Cloudlands".

"System 7" , gods of psychedelic techno and chillout step up with a track from "Point 3 - Water Album". "Steve Hillage" and "Miquette Giraudy", both members of space jazz eclectic rockers "Gong", formed System 7 after hearing the likes of The Orb playing Hillage's 1979 ambient record "Rainbow Dome Musick". They soon became part of the underground dance scene in London. Hillage released a number of solo prog space rock albums from as early as 1975 with quite a number of them charting in the UK top 50. The second solo album , simply titled "L" went as high at top 10. While Hillage and Giraudy form the core of System 7, it is more of an extended collaboratory project with artists such as Carl Craig, Laurent Garnier, Derrick May, Alex Paterson (of The Orb), and Youth. Unusually for an ambient/dance band, System 7 makes extensive use of Hillage's guitars. Hillage and Giraudy have also launched a spin-off project called "Mirror System", which they describe as "the new vehicle for developing the chilled & downtempo dimensions of our music". They have also worked under the name Groovy Intent.

Next up is "Sync24" with the track Hibernation. This comes from the "Chillogram" compilation released by one of my favorite labels, "Peak Records". Peak Records have loads of excellent psychill artists on their roster at the moment and don't look like slowing down. Synch24 is part of the Ultimae Records juggernaut and also a member of the much loved "Carbon Based Lifeforms".

"P.La
oss" featured in the episode 21 of PsyAmb with his minimal dubby ambiance. This time we have an ever more stripped back tune , once again from his "Landscapes and Machines" CD.

After that is composer and musician "Clint Mansell" with a tune from the soundtrack to "The Fountain". Beautiful music that sends your body off floating into the ether of imaginary fields. I was very surprised to discover that Clint was the lead singer of "Pop Will Eat Itself" back in the mid 80s to mid 90s. Good to see he is still producing the goods. This is about as far removed from PWEI as you can get ! The movie is awesome too ! He has also done soundtracks for "Requiem for a Dream" and "Pi". Pi had a brilliant soundtrack too - all those frenetic industrial scrapes and drum and bass beats.

Following Clint we have a tune from "Nick Doof ( aka Nick Barber aka Doof )". Nick has been around the psychedelic music scene since the early 90s. Nick is also one third of Vatos Locos, along with Celli Firmi and Xavier Fux,and half of one of my dub favs - Third Ear Audio with Celli Firmi. Apart from an extensive catalogue of electronic music under his belt, Nick also released a collection of songs in a more traditional folk / vocal style called "Clear Blue Sky" . It's surprising quite good too - very smooth and relaxing. This tune comes from Tip Worlds great "Twelve" compilation of some years back.

Canadian duo "Drift" are next with the tune "Frog" from the compilation "Northern Circuits". Drift comprises of talented multi instrumentalist and electronic producer "Adahm Shaik" and guitarist Tim Floyd. If you can track down their self titled debut album , don't hesitate to part with the cash - its awe-inspiring. Long and smooth guitar tinged rivers of ethno-dub ambiance .

"Sister Bliss" by "Ganja Beats" is a lovely little tune featuring some wonderful gliding vocal chants . Ganja Beats is the name used by the very prolific artist Jake Stephensen. Jack was known for running the Kinetix label, but also for making music as Shamanic Tribes On Acid, Alien Mutation, Dr. Psychedelic, Mantra, Crystal Moon (together with Ishq), Bass Meditation, Mind Control, Eyetek, Whitestar and off course Optica and Optic Eye. Jake tragically died back in 2005 at the age of 42
, right after he had completed the album this tune comes from , "Paradise & Tranquility".

The final track for this week is another tune from "Matt Coldrick". This time from his CD "Music For A Busy Head" which is a well loved favorite of mine. Once again , check out the "Absoulte Ambient" website for more info. You can also sign up to the Absolute Ambient newsletter there so you can keep up to date with future releases from this excellent label.

That's it for this week. Hope you all enjoy this ambient music mix - its a nice change I think. Something that can play out in the background while you go about your daily activities. 8)

Ambient Dub Mix Download - PsyAmb 21

2010 kicks off with a short but sweet ambient dub mix. First up is "Phillip Laoss" with a a super soft dub "Situated On A Hill" from the "Landscapes and Machines" CD on "Somnia Records". Somnia is home to some great ambient artists such as Kilowatts and Motionfield. Well worth checking out if you dig spacious, ambient glitch dub sounds.

Following Phillip we continue the vibe with "Yagya" and his track "Discernment". Icelandic producer Yagya (Aðalsteinn Guðmundsson) has been creating atmospheres through melody and sounds for more than a decade. A member of the Thule Musik collective, Yagya also is known for his work as half of Sanasol and also the famed Plastic.

Next up is "Dub Inside of Us" by "Waveform". This is from Waveform's 5 track digital EP titled "Aromatherpy". You kind find this through the Deeplimit website. Deeplimit is a digital net label which releases all music under the "Creative Commons 3.0" (Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 Unported). In short this means you are free to download and copy the tunes from the site. Check it out - there is a wealth of fascinating music on there.

Back in 1996 when I was getting into ambient electronic dub tunes there was a brilliant compilation I picked up called the "High Priests of Electronic Dub". One of the stand out tunes on the compilation was the hypnotic remix of Download's tune "Attalal" by "Biosphere". I used to play that tune over and over so I hope you enjoy this one. One year later in 1997 Biosphere would go on to release the seminal "Substrata" album , one of the best ambient music albums of all time. "Download" also has an interesting history in that it features members of Skinny Puppy - a band many consider to be the founders of the electro-industrial sound.

"Pharoelidae" are next with the track "Entheognosis". This is another free download I acquired through the excellent "Ektoplazm" website. It can be found as part of the "Entheos Audio Archive Vol 1.0" compilation. Really good quality stuff considering the price. Ektoplazm has an extensive library of psytrance and psychedelic ambient music available for free download so don't delay in taking advantage of that one.

Any fan of ambient dub would be more that a little bit aware of the next artist in today's mix. "Stress Assassin" a.k.a Henrik Jonsson from Sweden. Henrik's debut CD "Within the Office of Eye and Ear" was released in 2002. It still stands up as one of the finest ambient dub albums of all time. Having received such great reviews on his first release, Henrik followed up with the album "Carrier Track" in 2003. The second releases did not achieve the same success as "Within" and Henrik soon changed his moniker to "Porn Sword Tobacco" along with a new direction in sound.

Zero Cult was one of my favorite artists of 2009 and featured in a number of mixes from last year as well garnering a creditable position on my year end poll. This tune , "Walking on The Moon", has a backing melody that reminds me of the tunes on Healer's "WonderGround" album. I wonder if Emil was ever a fan ....

By the way , speaking of Healer , you can download a lot of his tunes for free ( 320kbit ! ) at his website.

After Zero Cult we have "Kuba" with a track from the CD "How the Future Sounded". Kuba ( Laurence Harvey ) is one of the most respected artists in the psychedelic ambient music scene. It's not hard to see why - his output has been both prolific and of a consistent high quality. I don't think I've ever heard a bad tune from him ! Last year saw the release of his fourth studio album "Bringing it all back home" on "Chillcode music".

"Warp Technique" follow up next with the tune "Make Animals Happy" from the album of the same name. The album was one of favorites of 2008. If you haven't heard it yet then I definitely recommend tracking down a copy. It has some excellent artwork by Japanese artist "Yuki Mori". Check out the "Dubmission Records" website for more info. Some of you may be interested to know that Bill Robin of Warp Technique has done remixes for Pitch Black in the past under the alias "Friends Electric".

Next up is a group that have a special place in my heart. "The Omm Squad" are an Australian trio consisting of of Chris Innes, Damiano Verna and John Crombie. They have been around for about 10 years producing various styles of electronic music from break beat / drum and bass to dub and the occasional psy trance tune.

Prior to this Chris & Damiano played in number of indie rock bands around Melbourne, releasing music through the Shock label, whilst John played Hardcore punk in a number of outfits around the same time. This tune, remixed by "Side Liner" , is from the "Nova Natura" compilation released through "Cosmicleaf Records".

Today's mix is rounded off with an unlikely tune from GMS and Jimbo - two acts perhaps best known for their thumping psychedelic trance music. Still , when they put on their dub hats and mix in some of their trippy psy riffs it kind of works and provides for something a little different.

I guess that's it for now. Please enjoy this little dubby offering and I wish you all the best for 2010 ! Bredren and Sistren ... Irie ! I and I .
